“Did you cook the food we ate for dinner last night?” I asked, looking over at Synnove.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Layla roll her eyes. We had been walking for several hours, and it was obvious Layla was starting to get bored. Any of the fear or anxiety she might have been feeling after the encounter with the strange object was gone now, and her eager, adventurous spirit had returned. She was waiting for something else to happen, anything to break up the tedious stretch of unchanging surroundings and unbroken walking.

“Yes,” Synnove said.

“It was delicious,” I said. “I’ve never tasted anything like that before.”

“They are traditional recipes,” Synnove said. “Made with ingredients native to our area of Vihm.”

“Is this really the conversation we’re going to be having now?” Layla asked. “We’re going to start talking about the food we ate?”

I shrugged. “Is there something else you want to talk about?”

“How about, what is this place?” she asked. “Why do you keep talking about how big and complex it is? Why do people still think it doesn’t exist?”

“I don’t know how to answer you,” Synnove said. “Vihm is what it is. It’s the way it has always been. We don’t question it any more than you would question why your home planet is the way it is. It may seem strange to anyone who doesn’t come from here, but to us, it is home. It’s hard to describe it to someone who is not familiar with it. Especially because there are many parts of it that we ourselves don’t understand. You see, there are parts of Vihm that seem to change on their own whim. I can’t describe it in any way other than that.”

“They change?” I ask.

“Yes,” Synnove said. “The land will be one way, and then in a few steps, it will change. Travelers have told us stories of exploring corners of the planet only to find themselves in a different place without knowing what happened. Some say they were traveling with others, and when the land around them changed, they lost their companions, never to find them again. But this was years ago, before the travelers stopped coming. We never knew much about them. They came without knowing where they were coming, appearing in our area just like you did. When they arrived, we offered them comfort for the night, and they would tell us their stories in return.”

“I still don’t understand how this place has stayed such a mystery,” I said. “You keep mentioning travelers and visitors. That means people came here. The criminals came here. The Scavenger came here. Yet on the outside, so many still think this planet is a myth. We came in this direction not even knowing where we were going or how to get here. It was purely by chance we crashed here.”

“Nothing is by chance,” Synnove said. “Everything happens exactly as it is supposed to, whether you understand it or not. You came here because you were meant to.
